New birdy comic website from nudone and timns

just a quick announcemet for our new comic strip website. as you'll see, the characters are probably related to Cody, or are his friends, at least. who knows, maybe Cody will make an appearance.

the work is a collaboration between me and another DC member, timns.

there are plenty of strips lined up and ready to go, updates will be on mondays and thursdays. the website itself is not 100% finished but it's close enough for the moment (there's plenty of stuff that needs cleaning or tweaking underneath it all).

i hope you have time to have a look and become a regular reader. there's the usual RSS and email subscriptions services available.

here's the link: http://www.head-in-the-clouds.com

This new comic site is from Nick Pearson, a talented artist and the person who designed the mascot for DonationCoder.

Digging for Snails...and the Hidden Internet

Recently, while I was having a lot of trouble getting the Digg site to work on my old slow computer, I found a couple of alternatives that could be very helpful to anyone in the same situation.

Digg, Digg Lite, Digg Ultra-Lite

Taking it a step further, I wrote another article that will be of use to anyone struggling with an old slow computer on the internet, or even a newer one on a slow dialup connection. There is an entire hidden internet out there, that is friendly to old machines and slow connections!

It's a case of where new technology gives new life to the old.

And if you surf the web on your phone or PDA, you can help others by providing some information that you might be more familiar with, and maybe even pick up a few links for yourself.

The New Breed of Snails are Good News for Old Snails

LifeHacker: Debunking Common Windows Performance Tweaking Myths

There is an unusually long and original post over at LifeHacker today discussing some common tweaks people use to speed up Windows, and which the author does not recommend.  Very useful and it would be nice to hear some feedback from donationcoder readers.

As a tech writer, one of my biggest pet peeves is the plethora of bad advice littered across almost every web site dedicated to system tweaking. Besides the tweaks that simply don't work, some of them will actually cause your computer to run even slower—or worse. Let's examine some of the most offensive myths out there regarding PC performance tweaking, and debunk them once and for all.

Essay: Why Free Software has poor usability, and how to improve it

I'm just making my way through this, but i like what i'm reading.. Not exactly mind-blowing stuff, but a very nice description of some problems and ways they can be ameliorated.

Quote
When I wrote the first version of this article six years ago, I called it “Why Free Software usability tends to suck”. The best open source applications and operating systems are more usable now than they were then. But this is largely from slow incremental improvements, and low-level competition between projects and distributors. Major problems with the design process itself remain largely unfixed.

Many of these problems are with volunteer software in general, not Free Software in particular. Hobbyist proprietary programs are often hard to use for many of the same reasons. But the easiest way of getting volunteers to contribute to a program is to make it open source. And while thousands of people are now employed in developing Free Software, most of its developers are volunteers. So it’s in Free Software that we see volunteer software’s usability problems most often.

Skimp or splurge?

I figure I'm not the only one broke these days. However, where I can, I buy things gently used or buy high quality new merchandise. I try not to waste money on cheap crap. I'm not a millionaire; I'm not even a hundred-aire. but as this MSN article suggests, there are a few items you can selectively save on:

  • Mattress: SPLURGE. You sit, sleep and God knows what else on this item. Get a good one.
  • Wristwatch: SKIMP. The phone now doubles as a timepiece.
  • Kitchen knife: SPLURGE. One good kitchen knife is a time-saver and is safer.

Maybe you should think of it as "splurging." It's not irresponsible or decadent to buy a quality item that you can use for decades at a reasonable price. (Of course, just because a product is expensive doesn't mean it is high quality...) And remember, if an item is high quality, sometimes you can buy it used!

So my question is: In what things do you "invest" for the long term?

Cybernetnews Looks at Wikimedia Projects: Wikiversity, Wikiquote, and more

Nice summary of some new wiki related projects.

Quote
When you think of the Wikimedia Foundation, what comes to mind? For us it’s immediately Wikipedia and Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales who started the foundation. It’s based in San Francisco, and the foundation operates several wiki projects including the ever-so-popular Wikipedia. Wikipedia is obviously the most popular site that’s part of the foundation, but there are other projects that are gaining some ground. Today we’ll be taking a look at some of the Wikimedia Foundation Projects that are currently going on, aside from their most popular, Wikipedia. They include: Wikiversity, Wikiquote, Wiki Books, and Wikispecies.

BeyondCompare 3 Released

Noticed this this morning - Scooter Software have finally released BeyondCompare 3! I say "finally" because when I bought version 2 three years ago, version 3 was supposed to be being released before the end of the year (2005)... Thus, this is a long awaited update!
