Interview With MIT Subway Hacker

A student from the group of MIT Boston subway hackers is interviewed by popularmechanics.
Quote
Its rare that a hacker convention makes national news, but three MIT students caused a whole lot of controversy when they planned a presentation about security holes in Boston's subway system for DefCon in Las Vegas earlier this month. They were forced to cancel the talk at the last minute by a 10-day federal restraining order, requested by Boston's Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA). On Tuesday, a judge denied motions by the MBTA to issue a preliminary injunction aimed at keeping the students quiet for a further five months. Now, in his most extensive interview to date, MIT subway hacker Zack Anderson talks with PM about what's wrong with the Charlie Card, what happened at DefCon, and what it's like to tango with the FBI and the MBTA.

'Prespectives' Provides a Firefox Security Boost

A new firefox extension from Carnegie-Mellon University provides protection from some recent web security threats.
Quote
Perspectives is a new approach to help clients securely identify Internet servers in order to avoid "man-in-the-middle" attacks. Perspectives is simple and cheap compared to existing approaches because it automatically builds a robust database of network identities using lightweight network probing by "network notaries" located in multiple vantage points across the Internet.
The extension provides two primary benefits:
   1. If you connect to a website with an untrusted (e.g.,self-signed certificate)*, Firefox will give you a very nasty security error and force you to manually install an exception. Perspectives can detect whether a self-signed certificate is valid, and automatically overrides the annoying security error page if it is safe to do so.
   2. It is possible that an attacker may trick one of the many Certificate Authorities trusted by Firefox into incorrectly issuing a certificate for a trusted website. Perspectives can also detect this attack and will warn you if things look suspicious.

Delphi 2009 (And C++ Builder 2009) Released

Some cool news for users of Borland/Codegear/Emarcadero Delphi and C++ Builder.  Seems like Delphi 2009 (and presumably C++ Builder 2009) has been released(!) and is available for pre-order now.

A list of what's new can be found here, along with some video demos.  Robust Unicode support is one of the big things, but there are also IDE improvements and some nice component upgrades.

http://www.codegear.com/products/delphi/win32

I'm a fan of C++ Builder myself, and many of my larger programs are built using it.

Codex Transportica - recognition at InspirationBit.com

Nick Pearson (Nudone), who created Cody the DonationCoder.com mascot who graces these pages, has created a couple of really cool sites on the web.

One of them, Codex Transportica, was recently written up by a Typography buff:

Hands on A Hard Body Documentary: Full Length on Google Video

I rented this on videotape from my old video rental store (That's Rentertainment) many years ago.. Really great stuff before these kinds of documentaries became popular.  You have to watch this.

It's a full-length documentary from 1998:

Twenty-four contestants compete in an endurance/sleep deprivation contest in order to win a brand new Nissan Hardbody truck. The last person to remain standing with his or her hand on the truck wins. An absurd marketing gimmick at first glance, the contest proves to be much more...

Tower Defense Flash Game of the Week: Attack of the Furries

We love Tower Defense games here at DC..  This one is a real charmer: Attack of the Flurries.

I'm not sure why but this is actually the first Tower Defense game that features resource management that i've actually enjoyed.  It's got a really nice balance of simple gameplay with the ability to mine for gold and energy to power your towers.

Most of the time when i play a game like this i feel like i don't know what i'm doing and can't tell if what i'm doing is making any difference, but here i could see when i didnt have enough energy or money, etc.

Very nicely done and worth the time to learn.

Aerobic Vertical mouse - first impressions

First impressions of the AerO2bic Vertical Mouse

It's a "vertical" mouse aimed mainly at people who are having trouble with wrist/arm/shoulder related to using regular mouse.

well, I dont think anyone, excluding gamers(!), would pay this much for a mouse unless they're having trouble in some way related to the use of regular mouse. I should probably state at this stage that I do have problems with my left shoulder (I'm left handed). In the past I've had problems with my wrist, arm, elbow as well but not at the moment.

With this mouse, the hand actually rests completely on the mouse, thumb to top. You can move the mouse and leave the hand completely relaxed. I personally at this stage cant really say how good this is - I like it a lot but it reminds me of the first time I drove a car with 5 gears (as opposed to just 4) - I found it so incredibly difficult to do this little extra movement that I wasnt used to doing. Likewise now, I'm aware of muscles in my shoulder & down my back that probably have never made these specific movements ..

What May Happen in the Next 100 Years (Predictions from 1901)

Some of these are fascinating. Attached is a scan but also linked is a typed up version which is much easier to read.

Predictions of the Year 2000
from The Ladies Home Journal  of December 1900

The Ladies Home Journal from December 1900, which contained a fascinating article by John Elfreth Watkins, Jr. “What May Happen in the Next Hundred Years”.

Mr. Watkins wrote: “These prophecies will seem strange, almost impossible. Yet, they have come from the most learned and conservative minds in America. To the wisest and most careful men in our greatest institutions of science and learning I have gone, asking each in his turn to forecast for me what, in his opinion, will have been wrought in his own field of investigation before the dawn of 2001 - a century from now. These opinions I have carefully transcribed.”

Check file/folder similarity, rename file when similiraty occurs

I will try to explain my needs simply.

I'm looking for a script/soft which search in a specific folder (and all subfolders) for this :

examplefile1.msf (file with .msf extension)
examplefile1 (file with no extension)
examplefile1.sbd (simple folder)

In this situation the script would be able to detect there is a folder which have the same of a file. (like in the example up there)
and the script would rename the "file1.msf" to "file1.msf.old"

Take That Stupid Printer -- Stop Tricking Me Into Wasting Ink!

I have a brother laser printer and love it.. but it looks like next time it tells me it's out of ink i might just have to stage an intervention..

Quote
I bought a cheap laser printer a couple years ago, and for a while, it worked perfectly. The printer, a Brother HL-2040, was fast, quiet, and produced sheet after sheet of top-quality prints—until one day last year, when it suddenly stopped working. I consulted the user manual and discovered that the printer thought its toner cartridge was empty. It refused to print a thing until I replaced the cartridge. But I'm a toner miser: For as long as I've been using laser printers, it's been my policy to switch to a new cartridge at the last possible moment, when my printouts get as faint as archival copies of the Declaration of Independence. But my printer's pages hadn't been fading at all. Did it really need new toner—or was my printer lying to me?

Elite Freeware: Great Software Blog

Came across this blog today because it had a review of Find and Run Robot, but there are a LOT of really nice thoughtful freeware reviews on the site.

The author of the blog seems like a no-nonsense kind of guy -- it's just a blog full of good reviews.  All he says about himself is he is from Chile.  They must be pretty serious about their software in Chile.  I'm impressed.

His blog deserves a much bigger audience.  I'll be visiting the site regularly.
